The door banged open, jolting me from the restless sleep I’d fallen into. Ione was still on the cot with me, and she yelped when guards rushed into the room. They already had pulse rifles raised and were shouting orders the way they had when they dragged us from the District.

“Get up!”

“On your feet!”

“Watch yourself!”

The commands got tangled as they spit them out, but we were more than versed in what was expected of us by this point and obeyed automatically. Standing, waiting, putting our hands behind our backs and allowing our wrists to be bound. I searched the faces of the men for any clues about what would come next, but it was useless. Their hard, angry expression gave away nothing.

To my shock, when something clicked around my wrists, it wasn’t the plastic ties I’d grown used to. These were metal, and they cut into my skin. I barely felt it because energy had already begun to flow through me, but I could tell they were sturdy. Doing a quick scan of those around me, I realized I was alone in this new development. At my side, Jessa was in the process of being bound with the same plastic ties I’d ripped off her earlier, and Ione already had an identical set around her wrists. They’d done this on purpose, hoping to prevent me from getting my hands free, and I had no idea if it would work. The cuffs were secure. Thick. If threatened, would I be able to break these? I had no idea.

“Out the door. Now,” a guard barked once we were all bound.

We obeyed, moving from the room in a clump, and like before, I grabbed the hem of Ione’s shirt.

“Stay close.”

She nodded but said nothing.

In the hall, we joined women from the other rooms, all of them also bound. I searched their faces for the ones I’d seen being tortured, wondering if they’d all recovered, but we were too close and there were too many of us.

It only took a few seconds to realize we were being ushered back the way we’d come. Did this mean they were taking us back to the District? I hoped so, but knowing Veronica Waters, it could mean anything. Maybe she wanted to parade us through the city now that it was daylight, or maybe we were being led to a firing squad. Maybe she had doctors waiting at the stadium…

I shuddered and pushed the thought away.

It was midday, and the sun was high when we stepped out, making me squint against the brightness. Crowds had gathered and hover cameras hung over them, eagerly capturing our exodus and broadcasting it for all of Polis. The District, too, would be able to see this. We only had a few hours of electricity every day, but Waters would make sure it was on now so our families could witness whatever she had planned.

The bus that had brought us here sat in front of the building, the doors open and waiting, and my heart soared at the sight of it.
